My husband and I plan to do either an all Italy tour (with a side trip to Malta) or a Spain (Andalucia region) and Portugal tour in June. We haven’t decided yet. But for either option we plan to spend at least two weeks travelling.

I’ve checked the Eurail 2 country pass and it will amount to 420 Euro and for a single country pass it’s 520 Euro. Both are for second class tickets. There are only certain cities/towns we’d like to visit. For Italy it would most likely be Bellagio, San Gimignano in the Tuscan Region, Florence, Siena, Rome, Naples and Sicily. If we pick the Spain-Portugal option, it would be Granada, Seville, Cordoba, Cadiz and then Lisbon, Sintra and Guimaraes. Would you suggest we buy a Eurail pass or just wing it by getting regular train tickets a day or so before we plan to take the train? We plan to finalise our schedule soon so we’d have fixed departure dates. Just wanted to know what you’d suggest. Thanks a lot. We appreciate your help!

I’d say they are fairly reliable. Are some late? Sure. But, for the most part, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Do you happen to know if the Italian train systems are reliable? We’d like to save lots of money, but I’ve heard that Trenitalia and other “Italian” trains tend to run minutes to 1.5 hours late. If we’re ALWAYS an hour or so later than schedule, then maybe it’s worth buying a Eurail etc pass in advance…? Thanks for the help! Can’t seem to find an answer for this yet online!
