Hi Matt, can I ask where are you from and how long are you planning your trip for and which countries. Anyone responded to your question?

So I’m planning a solo backpacking trip to Europe next summer (May – 2018) and it will be my first one! I’m super excited but already a bit frustrated/ nervous about getting around. I’ve read mostly all of your articles on transportation and I think I am going to do a combinations of flying and train travel. After reading, I’ve ruled out buying the “Eurail pass” as a result I am just going to buy single train tickets. For the Western European countries, like Spain, France, and Italy, their train websites are pretty straight forward. But for navigating some of the Eastern countries like, Poland, Hungary, and Czechia it can be very confusing. Would you recommend just booking hostels for those countries in advance and then buying the train tickets as you go (from the local train stations)? Or buying them in advance? I am just worried that I’ll have hostels booked in cities but then end up over-paying for train tickets. Also, have you ever just booked hostels on the fly (without reserving them weeks in advance) Cause I think it would be fun to just go wherever on the fly, but I fear that would not be feasible? Do you have any recommendations?

I used many of your tips on my recent trip to Europe so thank you for your informative article. I can’t recommend Rail Europe however. They sold my husband insurance under the guise of protection if your tickets are not in hand for any reason and then refused to help us. If you look under visitor posts on their Facebook page, all feedback is negative. Don’t use Rail Europe!

Also check out Seat61 for more info. Been to Europe three times in the last few years. Have never once rented a car. Always travel by rail and public transportation (bus, light rail). Found the cost to be reasonable. Experience is relaxing. Highly recommended. Only problem country was Italy. Seems like they always wanted a reservation even tho we had a Eurail pass. I hated the service (conductors and people who felt free to smoke) in Italy.
