Hello!

It was a little complicated what I did. I used a service called “send my bag”. I knew people in London, so on my flight from Canada to London I had my suitcase and backpack, but then dropped it at my friends house upon arrival. You can designate when you would like your bag picked up, and they are more or less precise on the delivery date. When I arrived in Bordeaux two weeks later, I had my bag delivered so that I would receive it within the next 2 days. It worked out great and they were really reliable. If you don’t know anyone overseas, you can just as easily ship from home (although a little more expensive.. but worth it!).

Good luck with your travels!

Hi Jessica,

I am in the same situation– did you find a place to store your suitcase before classes started so that you could backpack?

Thanks!

I am going to be touring Europe for 3 weeks before I begin a University exchange in Bordeaux. Do you have any tips of where I can store my suitcase so I don’t have to lug it around during my backpacking adventures?

Thanks!

I was always planning on a backpack but then I met the Rick Steve’s Rolling Backpack and now that is what I am taking. Really the best of both worlds. I also didn’t want to stand out with a hiking backpack, this pack looks more like a carry-on sized suitcase but has nice padded straps that hide a way. The wheels are set far apart so they don’t hit your back and while it is quality, it’s light. I’m happy I’ll be able to roll through airports and level streets and carry it on my back up stairs and I’ll blend in better.

take when travelling: Suitcase or backpack? Its a “not one size fits all” policy as we all have different travelling requirements and preferences. I had no real
preference when I was researching about which one I should purchase as both had
pros and cons. The humble backpack is easy to strap to your back when walking
up flights of stairs but suitcases can be wheeled around and are incredibly high-tech
these days with extendable handles, multidirectional spinning wheels and
hardtop exteriors. I found the solution to my problem, the 50l Hybrid Trolley at Kathmandu which combined the best of both worlds.

The suitcase features are its extendable handle and wheels to allow for convenience at the airport and taking it out of taxi’s, yet has the practicality of a backpack with fold away straps and attachment points for a smaller backpack to be secured, which is a genius idea as trying to wheel a suitcase whilst lugging a heavy carry on duffle bag at large airports is a nightmare. The hybrid weighs only 3 kilos and has extremely durable fabric, which expands to fit extra items you may pick up on your travels. I took it on my first overseas trip to Europe in Summer and it has stayed with me in -30 degree conditions in Canada whilst still remaining in perfect condition. I highly recommend this to anyone who is traveling for extended periods of time as its durability and flexibility are real winners in my eyes, and it’s under $150 which is a bonus.
